A few of my favorite Costco finds…
Clients and friends frequently ask me about which foods I like to purchase. I thought I'd share some of my favorite items from a few of my favorite stores, starting with Costco.
I have a love/hate relationship with Costco. I hate how much money I spend every time I go there! (Buying in bulk adds up fast!) But I love stocking up and having the food my large family needs on hand, plus Costco sometimes has great prices on items that can be hard to find elsewhere (at least for a similar price!)
Here are just a few of my favorites. I would love to hear about some of your personal favorites so I can add them to my list!
Kirkland Signature Organic Roasted Seaweed Snacks
Seaweed seems to be a "love it or hate it" food. I have never really met anyone who was middle of the road. But 3 of my 4 kids love it and willingly eat it, so we are big fans at this house.
Seaweed is nutrient-dense and is an excellent source of micronutrients including folate, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, and selenium. More importantly, seaweed is a great source of iodine. Plus seaweed snacks are salty and a little crunchy which can satisfy a craving without going for the deep-fried chips!
Kind Bar Variety Pack
Admittedly, Kind Bars are not the perfect health food. Raw nuts would be a "better"choice. BUT when you are looking for something that is easy to keep in your purse for an emergency, or you are just craving a little chocolate and don't want to eat an actual candy bar, they are a fabulous option! One of my favorite go-to snacks.
Costco carries the variety pack that contains two flavors: Salted Caramel & Dark Chocolate Almond and Dark Chocolate Almond & Sea Salt. Both of these flavors have only 5 grams of sugar. (Many of the Kind flavors have a LOT of sugar, so be sure to read the label!)
Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts: Raw Shelled Hemp Seeds
I love to eat hemp seeds along with flax and chia seeds. I sprinkle them on my kids' oatmeal and put them in my breakfast smoothie. I like to add them to my favorite energy bite recipes or sprinkle them on top of a salad.
Hemp seeds are 25% protein and contain all the essential amino acids so they are complete plant protein, like quinoa. They are also high in vitamin E and several minerals like potassium, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus. Hemp seeds have an optimal balance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (3:1). (Getting enough omega-3 fatty acids is a challenge for most of us.)
La Croix Sparkling Water
My family may be more than just a little bit obsessed with sparkling water this summer. It has become a daily treat, even for my kids. They love the bubbles and drinking from a can. They don't seem to mind the lack of sweetness.
My favorite is probably the grapefruit. (My son loves to say the word "pamplemousse.") Or maybe passionfruit -- pretty much any flavor except orange (and the rest of the family likes that one.) You can buy sparkling water anywhere and there are lots of other great brands besides La Croix. I just like to pick up a case when we are at Costco.
A few of my other favorite finds at Costco include:
- Chosen Foods 100% Pure Avocado Oil - perfect for roasting or sautéing vegetables or using in salad dressings
- Kirkland Signature Organic Coconut Oil - where else can you get a gigantic 84 oz. tub of coconut oil for less than $20!
- Kirkland Signature Organic Hummus Singles - how awesome for taking with you somewhere for a snack. I've also seen single servings of guacamole - yum!
- Kirkland Signature Three Berry Blend: Raspberries, Blueberries, & Blackberries - we love them in smoothies or just as a sweet frozen snack during the summer!
- Stretch Island Organic Fruit Strips - a fantastic alternative to fruit snacks for the kids
- Kirkland Signature Himalayan Pink Salt - I love pink salt! I also buy it on Amazon sometimes.
